The Network
Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as leprosy, river blindness, elephantiasis, schistosomiasis, rabies, intestinal worm infections and sleeping sickness predominantly affect the poorest parts of the world’s population. NTDs occur above all where medical care, safe drinking water and sanitation are lacking. In most cases, they do not lead directly to death, but cause blindness, disfigurations and disabilities. Affected children often lag behind their peers, while the working lives of adults are severely impaired.

The members of the Swiss Alliance against Neglected Tropical Diseases include the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, sections from the Universities of Zurich and Neuchâtel, the non-profit organizations FIND, Drugs for Neglected Tropical Diseases Initiative, Leprosy Mission Switzerland and FAIRMED, the Geneva University Hospitals, the Global Health Institute (EPFL), the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations and the pharmaceutical companies Novartis and Merck.
